Welcome to Authentic Aerial | | | | Photo by Don Carson | As Founder and former Director of Canopy Studio (an aerial arts and performance center in Athens, GA), I've had the opportunity to work with dancers and students of all ages, skill levels and choreographic interests. Having been Certified as a Movement Analyst (CMA) from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in New York City, I have been integrating the principles of Shape and Effort analysis in my teaching and performing. I have also been teaching workshops and doing private coaching at the New England Center for Circus Arts, Founded and Directed by Elsie and Serenity Smith in Brattleboro, VT for the past 3 years.
Aerial choreography is coming into its own as an art form that shares the same aesthetic concerns of all dance...authentic emotional intent and expression, phrasing, dynamic changes, initiation and quality of movement, spatial intent, shape clarity, transitions and nuanced gestures wedded with technical skill. Laban Movement Analysis offers tools, specifically through the understanding of Shape, Effort (the inner impulse, urge or motivation to move),Body and Space to address all of these concerns. Depending on the conceptual, emotional and spiritual intention of a dance, these elements can be consciously combined to support expressive content and quality of movement. Consciously choosing gives both a power and nuance to dances.
I have three workshop formats to offer, according to your needs, finances and time allowance.

Susan Murphy and I met in 1976 when she enrolled in my class. At the time, I was in the process of developing my aerial dance form, Motivity. Susan was a curious, focused student, and a promising performing artist. I was drawn to her warm-hearted manner. We discovered that we shared a great appreciation for the art of teaching holistically. I felt she understood how I was using motional improvisation with trapezes to discover new, organic movement while also encouraging students to find their own particular style in a safe environment. I saw that Susan was at ease performing and invited her to join a dance series I was creating, using different sizes trapezes. She was lovely to work with and watch. I am honored to call Susan a close friend and colleague. She has become a dance pioneer in her own right, contributing greatly to her community and the aerial dance world as an fine artist and educator.
